The Energy Efficiency Agreement

Eco-driving

The European Energy Services Directive aims to improve energy end-use efficiency in all sectors.

The Energy Efficiency Agreement requires the Government to place an obligation on energy suppliers, including transport fuel suppliers, to provide and promote fuel efficiency improvement measures and/or fuel efficiency audits to their customers.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has worked with fuel retailers to develop the Energy Efficiency Agreement to meet the Directive requirements. The Agreement applies to anyone who sells road transport fuel to the end-user. In signing the Agreement, fuel retailers agree to ensure their customers have access to fuel efficiency measures or fuel efficiency audits, and to promote them.

Measures include the provision of:

  • Tyre pressure gauges and air pumps (either for sale or available for use on forecourts)
  • High performance engine oils with proven fuel efficiency benefits over standard oils
  • Advanced fuels with proven fuel efficiency benefits over standard fuels
  • Eco-driving lessons
  • Vehicle maintenance checks
  • Low-rolling resistance tyres
  • Fuel efficiency audits which include advice tailored to consumer actions
