Scottish Boiler Scrappage Scheme

The Energy Saving Scotland Boiler Scrappage Scheme is now closed.

The Scottish Boiler Scrappage Scheme has seen a huge level of interest and we have now allocated all vouchers.

There are other Scottish Government schemes available such as the Energy Assistance Package. You may be eligible for energy saving measures or even a whole new heating system. Find out more information about the Energy Assistance Package.

Give your home a check up and you could save around £300 per year. Calculate how much energy and money you can save in your home by completing an online Home Energy Check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no more boiler scrappage scheme?
The scheme was always based on a limited sum of money to raise interest in the role of high efficiency boilers and energy efficiency. The scheme has been extremely popular and all the money available under the scheme has now been allocated.

What happens to the voucher I have already received when the scheme closes? Will it still be honoured?
As long as you meet the terms and conditions of the Energy Saving Trust Boiler Scrappage Scheme, your voucher ensures that funding is allocated to you for your boiler replacement. The rebate for your boiler must be claimed within 12 weeks of the voucher being allocated. Unfortunately if your voucher expires, there is no more money to support a new application to the scheme.

Which boilers and boiler manufacturers can the vouchers be redeemed against?
Vouchers can be redeemed against any boiler manufacturer for Energy Saving Trust Recommended gas, oil or LPG boilers plus Microgeneration Certification Scheme-registered biomass boilers and heat pumps. Electric boilers are not eligible.

Installers must be registered with Gas Safe (for gas installations) and a recognised industry body such as CLE, SNIPEF or OFTEC. Members of certain other industry schemes may also be used and applicants can contact the Energy Saving Trust if they have any concerns about who they can use. Installation of a microgeneration technology must be carried out by a person qualified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme.

How will payment of the £400 be made?
You will need to pay for the new boiler and installation upfront and then claim back the £400 by sending the voucher and your invoice to us. Provided all eligibility criteria are met, payment will be issued within 25 working days of receipt of the voucher and invoice.

What is the purpose of the Boiler Scrappage Scheme?
Scotland has one of the most ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets in the world. The installation of an efficient heating system is an effective way of reducing household energy bills and CO2 emissions, as domestic heating and hot water accounts for around 16 per cent of Scotland’s CO2 emissions. There are currently an estimated 250,000 homes in Scotland with the very least efficient type of boiler (G-rated).

To address this, the Scottish Government is offered up to 5,000 households £400 towards the cost of upgrading their boiler to a high efficiency Energy Saving Trust Recommended one. This will help to save around 5,000 tonnes CO2 per year - equivalent to taking 1,700 cars off the road.

What are the benefits in upgrading your boiler?
New boilers have rated efficiencies of 90 per cent or more meaning that they use less fuel, resulting in lower CO2 emissions and running costs.

For example, this means by upgrading your G-rated boiler to an Energy Saving Trust Recommended one, your household heating bill should drop by about a quarter - a saving of £225 a year for a 3 bed semi-detached house.
