Home renewables are good for the environment and good for your pocket too.
We've all heard of solar panels and wind turbines.
But renewable energy is energy from any source that is naturally replenished when used. There are lots of different technologies available - usually used to produce electricity or to generate heat.
Often called 'renewables', 'green energy', 'microgeneration' or 'sustainable energy', the main sources of renewable energy for the home are:
There are lots of good reasons. Here are just a few of the benefits
As well as saving money on bills, if you generate your own electricity, you might be able to sell any surplus energy you produce to energy companies.
If you don't produce a surplus and have to rely on a grid connection for some of your power, you can sell all of what you produce and "buy back" what you need.
By generating green electricity, you can also earn Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs). ROCs can be traded for cash or offset against bills.
Scotland already generates a lot of energy from renewable sources and has the potential to generate lots more energy.
The Scottish Government strongly supports householders and communities by providing funding for home renewables advice and grants for renewable energy systems. In addition the Scottish Government also encourage the development of large-scale energy projects.
