Boiler Scrappage Scheme
This scheme is now open.
If you are a private sector landlord, click here to take part, otherwise please read details below.
Scotland has one of the most ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets in the world. The installation of an efficient heating system is one effective way of reducing your household energy bills and CO2 emissions. There are currently an estimated 250,000 homes in Scotland that have boilers of the least efficient type (efficiency of less than 70%).
To help address this, the Scottish Government has announced funding for the boiler scrappage scheme for owner occupiers in Scotland. Scrappage schemes work by helping to meet the cost of replacing inefficient equipment with new more efficient alternatives.
The Energy Saving Scotland Boiler Scrappage Scheme builds upon its earlier success from its launch in May 2010. It will offer owner occupiers a voucher entitling them to a £400 subsidy from the Scottish Government towards the cost of upgrading inefficient boilers with an Energy Saving Trust Recommended (ESTR) boiler in their property.
In addition to this £400 some boiler installers are offering a further discount to those awarded boiler scrappage vouchers, see below for details:
- Scottish Hydro is offering an exclusive £50 discount, on top of their existing £250 discount and 2 years free boiler and central heating cover, for selected boilers purchased under the boiler scrappage scheme. For more details call 0845 070 2244 quoting 'estbss'
- Plumb and Parts Center are offering a further £50 discount on any Worcester Bosch boiler purchased under the boiler scrappage scheme provided that a SNIPEF registered business who is also Gas Safe registered is used for the installation of the boiler. For more details your installer should call 0870 1622557 and quote your voucher number which will be on the issued boiler scrappage scheme voucher
- Plumbing Trade Supplies are offering an additional £50 discount on any Glow-worm boiler exclusively to Boiler Scrappage Scheme voucher holders. The boilers can be purchased at any PTS branch in Scotland. For more information or to claim your additional discount please call 01786 434 828
- Vaillant Ltd are pleased to offer an additional £100 cash back on any Vaillant boiler purchased under the Scottish Boiler Scrappage Scheme. For further information contact us on 0800 0112010, alternatively contact your local gas safe registered installer.
The Energy Saving Trust is not recommending that you should use these installers. You should bear in mind that there are always a wide range of suppliers and prices for new boilers. We therefore advise that you get more than one quote before installation.
The installer must be Gas Safe registered (for gas installation) and OFTEC registered (for oil installations) and should be a member of a recognised industry body such as CLE or SNIPEF.
By using a SNIPEF member you will have access to an independent complaints process if you have any complaints about the work undertaken by a SNIPEF member. All work undertaken by SNIPEF members for domestic property is covered by a free Guarantee of Work Scheme. This means that in an instance where a firm has installed a replacement boiler at your property and subsequently goes out of business the Scheme will pay for an inspection of the work and if it is deemed that the fault was caused by the installer the SNIPEF scheme will pay for the cost of the work to be put right at no cost to yourself. All members of SNIPEF hold Public & Employers’ Liability Insurance and employ properly qualified and trained plumbing and heating operatives who have a wide range of technical skills and competences.
The scheme is now open.
Quotes
You should obtain a written or verbal quotation from an installer before making your application however you are not obliged to take up this quote and can seek others. Applicants have 18 weeks to claim the voucher from the offer date and as long as the voucher is claimed by this date and the installer and replacement system meet the self-certified eligibility criteria your voucher will be considered for payment. It may be beneficial to seek more than one quotation in order to obtain the best value for money.
What are the benefits?
Upgrading your boiler can result in:
- Lower running costs
- Reduced CO2 emissions
- Lower energy bills
For example, this means that by upgrading an existing gas boiler with a SAP2009 efficiency of less than 70% to an Energy Saving Trust Recommended one, your household heating bill should drop by about a quarter – a saving on average of £185 a year or £225 for a 3 bed semi-detached house.
How do I apply?
Once you have checked the eligibility criteria you should:
- Obtain a quote for your boiler replacement
- Apply for a voucher online or by telephone on 0800 512 012
- Seek other quotes to gain value for money and arrange the installation of your new boiler
- Pay for the boiler and installation work up-front
- Claim back the £400 by sending the completed voucher and invoice back to us by within 18 weeks
On the application form you will be asked for the following:
- Your address
- Some details of your existing boiler
- The date you received your quote for the new boiler installation
- The Installation company name
- Installer accreditation number (e.g. gas safe number)
- Manufacturer and make of replacement boiler
Please note, if you proceed with your installation before you receive your voucher, you will invalidate your claim and you will no longer be eligible for the £400 rebate.
