EfW plans underway

Plans are now underway to create 12 energy from waste (EfW) plants in the UK.

The £600 million venture has been launched by BioGen Power, which is based in Westby.

According to the Blackpool Gazette, the firm is preparing to build its first advanced thermal treatment (ATT) plant in the UK, which will be based in North Ayrshire, Scotland.

"This is a major achievement for the company and is the culmination of seven years of research and development," said Chris Reeve, chief executive officer at BioGen.

He added the plant will be the first EfW plant utilising its specific technology type in the UK and that it might ease pressure on local authorities who are looking for ways to boost sustainable energy generation and reduce waste.

It is thought that the plant will be fully operational by 2010 and will treat an initial 80,000 tonnes of non-hazardous waste. Heat energy produced by the treatment can be converted to electricity or can provide hot water for local communities.

BioGen Power was established in 2005 and is currently working to become a leader in the ATT EfW sector, according to the firm's website.
