Derbyshire gets greenest development

18 August 2008

A renewable heating system based on biomass is to be part of the most environmentally friendly development in Derbyshire.

The North East Derbyshire District Council has granted planning permission to LHA-ASRA to build 32 new affordable homes to specifications for level four of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The two-bedroom bungalows will use a biomass boiler which burns wood pellets, which will help the homes have 44 per cent lower emissions than other regulation-compliant buildings.

As a result of using biomass boilers, the residents, who will be over-55s, will have lower gas and electricity bills.

Robert Nettleton, regeneration director at LHA-ASRA, said: "These homes are genuinely ground-breaking in their use of eco-technology. Ultimately that means the homes will require less fuel for heating and lighting and with fuel prices rising so rapidly, minimising bills for our residents is a top priority."

The Code for Sustainable Houses replaced the Ecohomes standard for homes in April 2007. Under government targets, all new build homes must be zero-carbon by 2016.
