Ofgem wants 'categoric assurances' on energy prices

24 January 2008

Energy watchdog Ofgem is probing allegations of price fixing by the UK's top six gas and electricity suppliers.

The regulator has reportedly written to the Energy Retail Association (ERA) asking for clarification that those present at meetings of the industry lobby group were not colluding on illicit pricing.

The six suppliers in question are British Gas, npower, Edf, Scottish Power, E.on and Scottish and Southern Energy,

Ofgem last week said it was of the view that the UK gas and power market was competitive and functioning efficiently.

But the Times said Ofgem was still seeking 'categoric assurances' that the ERA was not being used to discuss pricing issues.
