Residents become energy efficient in British Gas competition

26 July 2008

Residents of a street in Scotland have been making a concerted effort to reduce their environmental impact.

A Scotsman report has highlighted the environmental endeavours of householders living on Colinton Mains Green in Edinburgh, who are taking part in the British Gas Green Streets competition.

Some £30,000 was given to the homeowners, who then took a series of measures to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

The McGuire family claim that their energy bills have been reduced by 47 per cent after they began taking steps to use less energy, such as switching lights off and boiling less water.

Mrs Fair replaced her inefficient boiler and installed insulation. She commented: "The difference in terms of the cavity wall insulation is amazing. The house is never cold."

A report in the Yorkshire Evening Post recently suggested that by taking such measures, householders may be more successful when it comes to selling a property.
