London Congestion Charge discount

If you drive into central London every day, you could save £1,600 per year by driving a car with reduced emissions (based on 200 visits per annum).

The London Congestion Charge came into force on 17th February 2003, and the tariff was increased on the 4th July 2005. Vehicles travelling into the congestion zone have to pay £8 per day between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).

Transport for London offers a 100% discount on the £8 London Congestion Charge for vehicles on the PowerShift register. All it costs is a £10 annual registration fee (payable to Transport for London).

What is the PowerShift register?
  • The PowerShift register is the authoritative source for information regarding vehicles which are eligible for discount from the Transport for London congestion charge scheme.
  • Approval is based on the particular combination of vehicle (make, model and model year), equipment (either LPG, NG or Hybrid) and manufacturer or converter. Please check all these details carefully if you are considering buying a vehicle with the aim of receiving the congestion charge discount.
  • Full electric vehicles are not included on the PowerShift register as they are already exempt from the congestion charge scheme; owners still need to register their vehicles with Transport for London.
  • Click here to access the register, and then click on the vehicle manufacturer you wish to view. There is a separate file which provides the contact details of the approved suppliers and converters.
  • The Energy Saving Trust maintains the PowerShift register on behalf of Transport for London. Vehicle eligibility is controlled by a system of approval. Prospective applicant companies should contact the Energy Saving Trust.
  • Vehicles, equipment and manufacturer or converters can all be removed from the register for a number of reasons.

See the PDF PowerShift register for more details of vehicles that are eligible for a discount from the charge. Contact details for vehicle or conversion suppliers are available on the PDF Approved Companies List.

For more information about the charge, how it works, or how to apply for a discount (including online registration forms), visit the Transport for London website or ring 0845 900 1234.

  • All after sales issues are matters to be resolved directly between the vehicle owner and the vehicle manufacturer or converter.
  • The support of the Energy Saving Trust shall not extend to litigation.
  • The final decision for eligibility remains with Transport for London.
