Project Funding (Revenue)

Community groups and other organisations involved in sustainable energy projects can finance their initiatives in a number of ways. Funding may be available locally, for example through partnerships with local authorities, energy suppliers, and other local organisations. However, there are also regional and national sources of funding and grants to be aware of.

You can use our new funding database to search for money to help you develop and run a sustainable energy project. Click here to open the funding database. The database provides a summary of funding sources including a brief description, eligibility criteria, eligible expenditure, grant limits, timeframes, deadlines and further contact details.

Grants (Capital)

The funding database is primarily for identifying sources of revenue funding for the delivery of an energy project. If you are looking for capital grants towards the installation of energy efficiency measures we would recommend the following sources:

Local Authorities & Housing Providers
This section of the Energy Saving Trust website provides further information on funding and grants available from EST and other outside organisations for sustainable energy and sustainable transport projects. Details such as a brief description, eligibility criteria, eligible expenditure, grant limits, timeframes, deadlines and further contact details are all provided.

My Home
This website is designed specifically for consumers to find out more about the energy used in their home and ways to reduce energy consumption. You can search the funding section of the site to find out about grants and offers from government, energy suppliers and local authorities.

The Energy Efficiency Commitment (EEC)
This is a statutory obligation on energy suppliers with 15,000 or more domestic customers to deliver energy efficiency improvements in housing.

Low Carbon Building Programme
Launched on 1 April 2006, phase one of the DTI's low carbon buildings programme will run over three years and replaces the previous DTI Clear Skies and Solar PV grant programmes. Open to householders, public, not for profit and commercial organisations across the UK (except the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man), the programme will demonstrate how energy efficiency and microgeneration can work hand in hand to create low carbon buildings.

Warm Deal , Warm Front, Warm Homes and HEES
These programmes (and associated 'plus' programmes) which run in Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales respectively, aim to provide grants for a raft of energy efficiency measures to those individuals most likely to be suffering from fuel poverty and also vulnerable to its effects.

The Scottish Central Heating Programme
This provides a package of measures including central heating to those over 60 who have no central heating.

Transco Affordable Warmth Programme
This underwrites operating leases for local authorities and housing associations to enable them to borrow money more cheaply for installations of efficient gas central heating coupled with other energy efficiency measures in social housing.

Scottish community and householder renewables initiative (SCHRI)
This initiative is funded by the Scottish Government to bring renewable energy to households and communities across Scotland. It has two funding streams to assist with the installation of a range of renewable energy technologies; one stream for communities which is managed jointly by the Energy Saving trust and Highlands and Islands Community Energy Company. To obtain an application pack contact the hotline on 0800 138 8858 or visit www.est.org.uk/schri

Climate Challenge Fund (Scotland)
The Climate Challenge Fund was set up by the Scottish Government in 2008 to help communities make a difference by significantly reducing carbon emissions. Carbon reduction must be at the heart of every proposal, but projects can involve a range of actions, from helping people to use less energy, or walk and cycle more, to local sustainable food. For more information on how to apply, contact the fund administrator on 01786 471333, email ccf@ksbscotland.org.uk or visit www.infoscotland.com/climatechallengefund
