Alternative travel
Exploring alternative modes of transport to the car
In 1980, cars accounted for 79 per cent of the total distance we travelled. Today, a little over 25 year's later, that figure has risen to over 85 per cent.
Unfortunately, such increased car use comes at a cost both to the environment and to our health. It therefore makes sense to encourage employees to consider alternative modes such as walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing.
As the figures show, persuading people to break the habit of simply getting into the car for every journey is a huge task. However, it is not an impossible one. After all, if every car commuter used an alternative to the car on just one day a week, car usage levels for commuting would be reduced by 20 per cent with immediate effect.
Information regarding sustainable travel is available from the Department for Transport and the Association for Commuter Transport (ACT).
