Homes Energy Efficiency Database (HEED)

What is HEED?

The Homes Energy Efficiency Database (HEED) is designed to help monitor and target carbon reduction and fuel poverty work. HEED is a national database which tracks house-by-house the sustainable energy characteristics of the UK's housing stock. It collects datasets on energy efficiency and microgeneration installations such as cavity wall insulation and solar hot water, along with property survey information such as Energy Performance Certificates. Now with date-stamped information describing over 1 in 3 of the UK's homes, HEED represents a powerful resource for the UK's sustainable energy network. Once registered, users can produce maps and reports about their area of interest via HEED Online.

More about the HEED programme

HEED currently contains information on over 10 million homes, which is around 42% of the UK housing stock. HEED also provides the central register for residential Energy Performance Certificates on behalf of the Scottish Government.

The database is designed to assist in three main ways:

  • Help assess installations of energy efficiency measures and microgeneration in the UK's homes, across different locations and over time.
  • Help assess the future potential for sustainable energy measures across the UK's homes, allowing improved targeting of programmes.
  • Provide a key source of information to assist local and central government in monitoring and reporting against their sustainable energy and housing duties.

This wealth of information can be accessed via the web tool HEED Online. HEED Online allows users to produce maps and reports from this data. The tool is intended to be a key source of information for people whose responsibilities include the monitoring, reporting or targeting of energy efficiency in the UK's homes.
