Community projects

The last five to ten years has seen a huge growth in community action on energy and climate change. These projects have a vital role to play in engaging more people with the issues and helping to achieve real carbon and energy savings on the ground.

This section of the website provides information and resources to help community projects. Whether your project is just starting out or well advanced, there should be resources here which can help your project. If you are at an early stage, look at Getting started; if you need information on a specific issue look in Support and guidance for our 'How to' guides and online tools.

Case studies

What have communities been doing? Our case studies include a range of projects, from people with just an idea of what they want to achieve as they embark on community energy projects, to those who are well on the way to making huge reductions in their carbon footprint.

What has motivated them to take action? What has made their projects successful? What challenges have they faced and overcome along the way? Read our case studies to find out, and get inspiration for your own community projects.

Video case studies

Our video case studies detail the type of project, the challenges faced, and how Green Communities was able to help the community group.

Green Communities

Two people have a discussion

Green Communities was an Energy Saving Trust programme that aimed to help communities deliver effective carbon savings and sustainable energy projects and support them in moving towards a low carbon future.

Due to funding constraints the Green Communities helpline, expert support, e-news and training services will not continue beyond 31st March 2011. We would like to thank our members for their support, and wish them success in their future projects.

This means that our Green Communities helpline on 0844 848 0077 and the email service at greencommunities@est.org.uk no longer operate - please delete them from your systems.

Our website is still packed with resources to help make your community-based energy project a success. We have a number of online tools that will help to kick-start your project, work out your community's carbon footprint, create an action plan, and find useful information and funding to help deliver your project. Get started now and save energy and money!
