An astounding 31 billion cups of coffee are drunk in the UK every year. This figure includes a huge number of takeway coffees in paper cups. And although many paper coffee cups are made from recycled material, they cannot be recycled again because of the wax coating that is needed to hold the fluid in the cup. In the case of just this one chain, that means that 18.25 million of their paper coffee cups are thrown away every year and end up on UK landfills.
