Council encourages parents to use cloth nappies

27 July 2010

Parents in Redbridge are being encouraged to consider using cloth nappies due to the environmental and economic benefits they offer.

Mothers and fathers were advised by the London borough's council that cloth or washable nappies are "a great modern alternative to disposables".

The advice comes as a new shop in South Woodford, called Sid & Evie's, has begun to stock a variety of brands of cloth nappy.

Anna Morgan from Ilford uses cloth diapers on her baby Andrey.

Ms Morgan commented: "It makes me feel good that I don't leave out sacks of rubbish each week … It takes over 500 years for a disposable nappy to degrade in landfill."

She added: "I'm glad I invested in cloth nappies, babies will be in nappies for at least a year and at about 10p per disposal nappy, I have recovered my money already in just six months."

Ms Morgan is a regular attendee of Nappy Natters sessions held in Ilford and Wanstead, where parents can get help and advice on using the cloth alternatives.
