Motorists get green driving classes
Norfolk City Council is offering motorists lessons in reducing their fuel consumption to cut the cost of motoring.
The course, which is available to transport businesses as well as individuals, costs £49 for one hour or £82 for three, but organisers say the savings quickly pay back the outlay.
According to the organisers, using the 'eco-safe' driving techniques learned on the course motorists can cut their fuel consumption by one fifth.
A coach company which sent its 18 drivers on the course reported a 19.6 per cent reduction in fuel consumption, according to the Norwich Evening News.
Among the techniques which the course suggests are avoiding accelerating or breaking suddenly. This requires drivers to anticipate their stops at traffic lights, crossroads and roundabouts better so that instead of braking at the last moment, they simply ease off the accelerator.
Another method involves 'block' gear changes, where the motorist skips a gear in order to keep down the engine's revolutions per minute.
Petrol prices have been steadily rising and against a backdrop of a downturn in the economy any measures that create financial savings are welcomed by motorists.
