Vehicles powered by electricity are more energy efficient than those that operate on hydrogen, an expert has claimed.
Professor David MacKay of the University of Cambridge said that green transport plans could be boosted through the use of electric cars, which use "ten times less energy" than hydrogen cars.
He added that the majority of hydrogen-powered vehicles use far more energy than the average fossil fuel-run car.
"Even if the electricity for electric vehicles comes from traditional fossil fuel power stations, electric cars are still more efficient than petrol cars," Professor McKay told the More or Less programme on BBC Radio 4.
"If in the future we switch over the nation's electricity production from fossil fuels to greener sources, then electric vehicles will win by a mile."
Earlier this month, the government launched a scheme to offer subsidies of up to £5,000 to Britons interested in buying electric or hybrid vehicles.
