A Northern Ireland bus builder is to provide the first low carbon vehicles to roll out in Dublin public transport fleet.
Ballymena-based Wrightbus has started making deliveries of the low carbon buses to the fleet of Dublin Bus, in accordance to a £7.8 million deal made earlier this year.
Wrightbus' hybrid-electric vehicles are powered by an electric motor as well as a diesel engine.
The batteries are charged both by the diesel engine and by capturing energy from braking.
Dublin Bus has claimed the new buses in its fleet emit 31 per cent less carbon dioxide, 97.6 per cent less carbon monoxide and 76.5 per cent less hydrocarbons.
The new wheelchair accessible double-deckers will also be 50 per cent less noisy than previous models.
Earlier this month Wrightbus' Gemini 2 EV was introduced into London's bus fleet for FirstGroup, though the new hybrid had been in a long-term in-service evaluation with Arriva.
