Supermarket giant Tesco is to invest £25 million over five years to build an institute aimed at tackling climate change.
The Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI) is billed as a research house with a remit to "revolutionise" green consumption patterns.
The SCI will be part of the University of Manchester and will fund research into recycling technology, carbon footprints and green consumerism.
With the global threat from climate change "clearer than ever", Tesco's chief executive Sir Terry Leahy said: "The scientific evidence has hardened. We need to move from a high-carbon to a low-carbon economy, but the answer is not 'do not consume'. It is intelligent consumption."
Mr Leahy said he was prepared for scientists at the SCI to reach conclusions he "didn't like". The research is to be made available to other retailers, manufacturers and think-tanks.
Alan Gilbert, Manchester University's president and vice-chancellor, said: "This is independent research. The industry partner has a right to talk to us about what problems it wants to have addressed, but it cannot manipulate the findings."
