A community building in Oxford has become one of the first in the country to save money on fuel bills through the installation of solar panels.
The West Oxford Community Centre is currently undergoing work to fit the panels which should generate around ten per cent of the centre's annual energy needs once operational, saving about £500 per year, the Oxford Mail has reported.
Community members are now hoping that the project will set an environmentally-friendly example to other groups in the city and around the country.
"The prominent position of the community centre will draw people's attention to the real possibility of making a difference to climate change through individual and collective actions," said Athene Reiss of the West Oxford Community Association.
"We hope the panels will inspire everyone who passes by to investigate alternative energy sources," she added.
The Telegraph reported recently that the solar energy market is expected to grow by 26 per cent this year, according to figures from banking group Kaupthing Singer and Friedlander, as the demand for panel installations continues to grow.
