Irish renewable energy firm OpenHydro has connected tidal power to the national grid for the first time, it has emerged.
The Open-Centre Turbine, situated off Orkney in Scotland at the European Marine Energy Centre, launched energy generation testing yesterday (May 26th).
OpenHydro's chief executive James Ives pointed out that the turbine, which is invisible from the surface of the water, is one of the first tidal technologies to be permanently deployed in the sea, according to allmediascotland.com.
Scotland's energy minister Jim Mather commented: "Scotland has unrivalled potential to generate clean, green energy from our seas. Marine power lies at the heart of our ambitions to develop a vibrant renewables sector," the news source reports.
OpenHydro also intends to install tidal turbines in sites across the globe, including Canada, Nova Scotia and the Bay of Fundy.
