A global chemical firm has announced that it will begin to produce bio-ethanol made entirely from municipal waste within the next two years.
Ineos has said that it will be able to provide the fuel in commercial quantities by using large quantities of municipal solid waste, organic commercial waste and agricultural residues.
The company has said that the bio-ethanol may be blended with traditional fuels or used as a standalone alternative.
Describing his hopes for the company, Peter Williams, chief executive of subsidiary INEOS Bio, said: "We expect our technology to provide cost competitive, sustainable, renewable fuels. We have the potential to produce large volumes of bio-ethanol viably across the world."
Having already run a pilot commercial-scale ethanol plant, Ineos believes that bio-ethanol supply will eventually supply ten per cent of all car fuel.
Outlining the benefits of using bio-ethanol as an alternative to regular fuel, Mr Williams said: "Our technology will make a major contribution to reducing greenhouse gases and the world's need for fossil fuels."
