Wind turbines in Spain set a new record for electricity generation, at one point meeting more than 40 per cent of the country's needs.
High winds across the north-west of the country yesterday morning, leading to the generation of 11.18 gigawatts of electricity, the equivalent of 29 per cent of the power needs at the time.
Earlier, when power demand had been lower, the turbines had produced 40 per cent of the electricity used around the country.
At the point when the turbines supplied the 11.8GW of electricity they were operating at 69 per cent of their total capacity.
Wind power projects in the UK could generate 3.3GW at full capacity, according to the British Wind Energy Agency.
"Wind is no longer a marginal supplier for us," Luis Atienza, Red Electrica's chief executive told the Financial Times.
Already this year wind power has met 11.5 per cent of the country's wind needs.
