The minister for energy and climate change has suggested that the UK will face a 'long-term transition' from fossil fuels to cleaner power supplies.
Speaking at the RenewableUK annual tidal and wave power conference, David Kidney highlighted the need for the UK to make provisions to move away from fossil fuels before they run out.
Mr Kidney said: "In the long term we need to make the transition from a system where we rely heavily on fossil fuels to a system which includes nuclear, renewable and clean coal power stations."
However, the minister believes that the gas and oil industries still have a major role to play for now.
He highlighted the recent round of offshore licensing which was approved by Lord Hunt earlier this year.
These will "boost the security of our oil and gas industry which right now produces three quarters of our energy needs and 350,000 jobs", the minister added.
