A planning loop hole may allow Tidal energy firm Atlantis Resources Corporation to expand its operations northern Scotland.
The firm says it is seeking out a fellow developer to test at its tidal-powered datacentre which would allow it to increase its size.
Under Crown Estate rules, companies are limited to generating up to 10MW from each generator design being demonstrated.
Atlantis is currently testing two generators with a joint capacity of 20MW but will not be able to receive more licenses until the turbines have been successfully up and running for two years.
Inviting a rival firm to start a third site would allow the company to extend its datacentre while staying within the rules.
Dr James Mitchell, head of business development at Atlantis, said: "There are real hurdles that need to be overcome if we are to make the most of the UK's huge tidal resource, not the least of which is the ten-year queue for renewables schemes to connect to the grid in Northern Scotland.
"Atlantis is committed to working with the rest of the industry to increase the pace of commercialisation and demonstrate that tidal energy can play a significant role in the future energy mix."
