Renewables offer interesting possibilities for electricity

12 September 2008

There are interesting possibilities in renewables, energy buyers have been advised by the Association of Electricity Producers (AEP).

David Porter, chief executive of the AEP, told the audience at the Energy Insight conference that the unstable political relationships in place with countries that supply fuel for power plants meant companies should look to renewables, New Energy Focus reports.

Prices volatility resulting from tensions with fuel producers, notably Russia, could disrupt the energy balance but the intermittent nature of wind power was also something the electricity network would have to contend with.

Although he said he was "very uneasy" with the immediate future of electricity supplies Mr Porter said a balance would emerge over time.

"There are a good amount of interesting possibilities for you in renewables," he said.

"In the long-term, by 2020, I don't think we'll be having this discussion, I think we will have loads of capacity. People want electricity, they love lots of electricity, and usually the public gets what it wants," he added.

The UK government has set a target of 15 per cent of electricity coming from renewable generation, a move EDG Energy managing director of energy services Eric Saloon welcomed.

He said: "We will have to make an effort to make use of renewable energy, we just have to make sure we use the right technology."
