A Scottish renewable firm has awarded a £2 million contract for the design and construction of a tidal stream device.
Swiss firm ABB has been awarded the contract to design Aquamarine's 2.4-megawatt Neptune device.
The agreement also includes the installation and commissioning of the device in the European Marine Centre in Orkney.
Martin McAdam, chief executive of Aquamarine, said: "With 20 years' experience in the wind-power sector, ABB is the right company to deliver our first tidal-power generating system."
Scotland is bidding to become a global centre for ocean energy, with First Minister Alex Salmond having voiced his desire to make the country the 'Saudi Arabia' of marine power.
The government recently launched a £10 million prize, which will be awarded to a renewable firm which develops a wave of tidal power technology which delivers 100 gigawatt hours over a continuous two-hour period.
According to Mr Salmond, the Saltire Prize has attracted interest from around the world.
