Regional developments to 'tackle climate change'

07 March 2010

New guidelines, published by the government today, are intended to help regional authorities make better of renewable and low-carbon energies.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change hopes that this latest document will help England's regions to line up with 2020 renewable energy targets.

Energy minister Lord Hunt commented: "Our target for renewables is ambitious and we want to see that ambition reflected at regional and local levels. We must make the move to low carbon energy supplies and everyone needs to be involved in that. Nationally we've nearly tripled renewable electricity since 2002 but more needs to be done."

He added that the regional targets for renewable energy use differed by area, but that these guidelines should help ensure that each region is working on a similar strategy.

The Welsh environment minister Jane Davidson attended European discussions in Paris this week.

These discussions also targeted regional improvements to Europe's energy-efficiency.

Ms Davidson commented: "Today's meeting will enable us to build on our achievements in Copenhagen where we were successful in securing world recognition of the importance of regional governments in tackling climate change."
