Wind, tidal and wave power projects in UK seas have a turnover of £32 million, according to the Crown Estate.
Its report on the marine economy notes the rapid growth in the renewable industry generally.
Between 2003 and 2005 the growth in the use of renewable energy was 22 per cent per year and in 2005 four per cent of electricity was generated by renewable methods, the report claims.
It also acknowledges that "the figures for 2005-6 have been massively overtaken by recent developments".
But although there has been growth in the sector and there are political drivers for the sector "wide uptake of offshore renewable energies must depend on production costs being competitive with conventional sources".
The West of Scotland is highlighted as the best place for sustained offshore winds and the Pentland Firth was said to have some of the strongest tidal streams around the UK.
A thorough survey of the Pentland Firth to map out the tidal and wave resources was recently launched.
