Exploiting up to 60GW of untapped wind and sea power could be made possible by a bid to build an offshore energy grid off the east coast of the UK.
The grid, which would stretch from the Orkneys to Norfolk, would help the UK move towards the EU target of generating 20 per cent of electricity from renewables.
Scottish Development International (SDI), an inbound investment agency, has been in talks with two Middle Eastern sovereign funds to secure investment in the project, according to the Independent.
Pail O'Brien, SDI senior executive for renewable energy told the newspaper that the project would "accelerate the offshore wind, wave and tidal energy projects in Scotland".
In total, he estimated the grid could help add 60GW to the UK's energy supply, almost double the current total of domestic consumption (33GW).
Altogether, the UK has a total electricity production capacity of 75GW, including coal, nuclear and renewables, though wind accounts for only 0.5GW.
