Work should commence immediately to ensure that renewable electricity generated offshore is transmitted to the National Grid, according to a new report.
With the expectation that 25 gigawatts of electricity will be generated offshore by 2020, the report for the Crown Estate suggested the £10.4 billion worth of construction on transmission infrastructure should start immediately.
It said a "no regret" approach was needed so that onshore element of the transmission network were able to smoothly deal with the renewable energy.
Rob Hastings, director of the marine estate at The Crown Estate said: "Ensuring that developers and the supply chain are confident that the grid issues are being addressed will attract investment and contribute to the UK's energy security of supply, help meet the UK's renewables targets and create jobs across the UK."
The UK has committed to generating 15 per cent of electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
Meanwhile, the Health and Safety Executive and international authorities are collaborating to develop new safety standards for offshore wind farms.
