A company which produces "silent" small-scale wind turbines has proposed to give a year's worth of its profits to people suffering from fuel poverty if a company buys 250 of its devices.
The offer from Renewable Devices Swift Turbines has been backed by Energy Action Scotland as a way of helping people who spend ten per cent or more of their income on their energy bills.
Dr Dave Anderson and Dr Charlie Silverton, the two Edinburgh University graduates who designed the 1.5kW Swift turbines said they could generate 2,000kWhs of electricity a year.
Dr Anderson added: "Installing a SWIFT in a fuel poor home will not only reduce the immediate household energy bills, but will continue to generate sustainable green electricity for many years to come."
Edinburgh Central MSP Sarah Boyack, who is working on a bill to support micro-generation for all households, has also supported the scheme.
She told New Energy Focus: "Enabling fuel poor households to generate their own electricity is part of a long term solution. The value of micro-generation cannot be underestimated given recent rises in energy costs."
The Scottish Executive has set a target of making 50 per cent of the country's electricity come from renewable sources by 2020.
