The clean marine energy sector is to benefit from the expertise of the carbon intensive aviation and oil industries in a bid to cut the cost of generating electricity from the seas.
A £1 million investment by the Carbon Trust is to provide for industries with relevant experience to transfer their technology to the renewable sector as part of its Marine Energy Accelerator.
According to the trust wave and tidal power could provide 20 per cent of the UK's current electricity needs, though it is held back in part by the high cost of generating power from the seas.
It claims that it has already identified ways to cut costs by 20 per cent and has set up the project to bring down the cost of components, which account for up to a third of a marine power project's total.
Turbine blades fro the aviation industry and underwater hydraulic systems from the oil industry are among the technologies that are being shared.
The government has committed the UK to generating 15 per cent of energy from renewable sources by 2020 and of cutting carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.
