A new manufacturing sector strategy to capitalise on the opportunities of a low-carbon economy, improve skills and polish the image of the sector as a workplace has been revealed by the government.
Promising medium term support of £150 million, business secretary John Hutton announced the plan, which aims to make the UK a world leader in green industries.
Mr Hutton said: "I want the UK to be at the forefront of opportunities opened up by the move towards a low-carbon economy. With the right support in place, we can grow our nuclear and renewables industries to become world leaders in green technologies, supporting hundreds of thousands of green-collar jobs."
New Challenges, New Opportunities will see the creation of a new Office for Renewable Energy Development to reduce obstacles to the use of renewable energy and make the sector supply chain more efficient.
The government is also to produce a Low Carbon Industrial Strategy next year that will focus on renewable energy and nuclear equipment supply chains as well as low carbon vehicles.
