Landfill gas is to be harnessed to generate gas that will power the equivalent of 6,000 homes in Belfast.
The former Giant's Park landfill site is to be converted into a gas-powered electricity facility which runs on gas extracted from the rubbish dump.
Initially, the power plant is expected to generate five megawatts of electricity, which will be exported to the National Grid via a new cable and sub-station.
Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Tom Hartley said: "The electricity generating facility at Giants Park will be of enormous environmental and economic benefit to Belfast.
"It will help create a brighter, cleaner and greener future for the city by eliminating the escape of potentially harmful greenhouse gas. It will also add to the amount of 'green' electricity produced from a sustainable source."
Landfill gas-powered facilities benefit from government renewable obligation certificates (ROCs) incentives for renewable facilities.
The methane based gas can also be used as an alternative car fuel in the form of liquid biomethane.
