Green energy 'roadmap' unveiled

21 November 2008

A 'roadmap' has been established which outlines the routes which the European Union's (EU) renewable energy industries could take in order to hit their targets.

The guide, named Renewable Energy Technology Roadmap - 20% by 2020, maps out how member states can achieve their goals.

It is hoped that in 12 years time, 20 per cent of all the energy needs in the EU will be supplied using renewable energy sources such as wind or solar power.

The document highlights a range of technology options for the European community such as the use of bioenergy and solar thermal power, photovoltaic technology and small hydropower plants.

"The announcement of the [EU's energy and climate] goals in March 2007 by the heads of states and governments of the 27 EU Member States was a first and important step in recognising the need for a substantial shift towards a more sustainable energy system," said Professor Arthouros Zervos, President of European Renewable Energy Council.

"Now it is high time to take the second step: implement the necessary legislation and tools to make the announced goals a reality and prove Europe's credibility and responsibility."
