Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne has delivered the first ever Annual Energy Statement to parliament.
The statement makes the claim that an 80 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is "achievable and compatible with keeping the lights on".
Delivering the paper, Mr Huhne said: "The challenge is ambitious but achievable. We're already on track to cut the UK's emissions by 34 per cent by 2020, and will do more if we can win the case for greater ambition across the whole EU.
"But our line of sight needs to extend much further, through to the middle of the century."
He added that "transparency, certainty and long-termism" were key to unlocking investment in the future of energy.
The statement confirmed that moving to a low-carbon economy would not be cheap.
However, the initial analysis did suggest the possibility of it being less expensive than conventional energy generation, partly due to the fact that the country will be protected from "fossil fuel price shocks".
