Energy companies are better prepared to deal with the effects of climate change as a result of a collaboration with the Met Office, it has claimed.
The project, entitled EP2, has considered the challenges the industry will face to meet increasing demand for energy while at the same time having to adapt to new climatic conditions.
Energy and climate change minister Mike O'Brien welcomed the report, saying: "Cutting emissions from energy plants is a crucial part of how we are tackling climate change, but our energy networks themselves must also be resilient to the changing world in which they operate."
He added that the collaboration between the energy industry and the Met Office would help anticipate impacts of climate change "and allow the industry to future-proof what it builds in the coming years".
Among the findings of the project are that risks to transformers will change as night time temperatures in cities rise.
It also noted the higher temperatures and seasonal differences in soil moisture might have an impact on electricity transmission cables.
Earlier this week, the Met Office said that the weather next month will probably be colder than usual and come closer to the long-term average.
