Eneco submits new request for North Sea wind farm

Eneco has applied for a licence to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment with a view to building a wind farm off the coast of the North Sea.

Its New Energy division submitted the application earlier this month following a request for a permit to construct Callantsoog-North wind farm back in June.

The company hopes that the request will allow it to increase the amount of energy generated and the number of wind turbines it is permitted to erect.

Located 23km off the coast in the Q10 block, the windfarm will have the capacity to generate up to 200 MegaWatt of energy – enough to power 200,000 homes.

Eneco already operates the nearby Princess Amalia Wind Farm which first started generating energy in June 2008.

New Energy division director Ton Meijer said: "Not only is the Q10 location relatively favourable but it is also very similar to that of the Princess Amalia Wind Farm.

"This allows us to directly apply the knowledge and experience gained with that wind farm to Q10 and therefore construct a new offshore wind farm in a relatively short period of time."

He added that together, the Callantsoog-North wind farm, the Q10 and the Princess Amalia would be able to supply ten per cent of all Dutch households with offshore wind energy within a few years.
