Boat powered by renewable energy launched on Med

29 July 2010

A catamaran powered by renewable energy was launched on the Mediterranean last weekend.

Powered exclusively by solar energy, the vessel was launched from Spain's south-eastern coast.

At 46 ft in length, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Solar is part of WWF Spain's new Embarcate (Get on Board) campaign.

The movement aims to promote the use of renewable energy, while encouraging awareness of conservation of marine ecosystems.

Jose Luis Garcia Varas, head of the Marine Program at WWF Spain, commented: "The WWF Solar is powered completely by the sun.

"It does not use sails, and it does not use any fossil fuels. It is a boat that causes no pollution - it does not emit any carbon dioxide whatsoever."

He added that the boat demonstrates the ease with which fossil fuels can be replaced with renewable energy.

The Kyocera Corporation recently announced that it has begun to supply solar modules for use in recreational boats.

Toyota Motor Corporation is using the modules in its own solar panels, which are installed on boats as a "supplemental, durable power source".
