The Southeast Bioenergy Conference in Georgia, US, has bought together some big players in the industry and has "served as a challenge and a warning", macon.com reported.
Now in its third year there were more visitors to the conference than ever before, bigger industry names and more participants from interested countries, the website reported.
Speaking to participants at the conference, Governor Sonny Perdue said: "If you do anything in your own heart today, promise me this won't be a fad.
"I'm confident the bioenergy industry and sector is going to be a cornerstone of the new Georgia."
The state has already poured $700 million (£375 million) into biofuels projects over the last three years and is home to a biofuels distributor and three working biofuels plants.
Governor Buchanan dismissed claims that biofuel production was pushing the cost of food up and claimed instead that the cost of transporting food and "other factors" were behind food price hikes.
