A proposed windfarm operation to be located in Rumster Forest may help regenerate the economy in Caithness if it is given the go-ahead by local residents, it has emerged.
The John O'Groat Journal reported that the proposed windfarm would be community-owned. Comprised of three wind turbines, it could have the potential to generate around £200,000 in annual revenue for the region over an operational period of 20 years.
Iain Gunn, chairman of the Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Development Company, said that following the approval of local residents, an application will be submitted to purchase a 40-hectare parcel of land to be the site of the windfarm.
It is thought that pending public approval, the land purchase could be authorized in July 2008 and the windfarm could be constructed and connected to the National Grid by December 2011.
The development firm has assured local residents that no more than three turbines will be built and that the windfarm will be partially hidden by the forest.
In other windfarm news, the Shetland Islands council is planning to reopen a consultation to determine where potential sites for new windfarms on the islands could be located, the Shetland News reported.
