Government plans for windfarm expansion

29 June 2008

The government has announced plans for a massive expansion of windfarms in the UK to help meet EU-imposed targets on renewable energy generation.

According to the prime minister, by 2020 some 3,000 offshore wind turbines would be installed in the waters around Britain and a further 4,000 would be built onshore.

The government is looking to generate 15 per cent of the UK's energy from renewable sources by 2020 and hopes the expansion of windfarms will help it achieve this goal.

Gordon Brown said changes to the country's landscape were "inevitable" as a result of new windfarms, but insisted they would be sited in the right locations to minimise the impact on local communities.

In Scotland two new windfarms were approved for South Ayrshire yesterday. Together they will generate enough electricity to power 117,000 homes.

Scottish energy minister Jim Mather said: "Scotland has a vast array of potentially cheap, renewable energy sources, from our waters, our waves and our wind. We are turning that potential into reality."
