Lancashire County Council has launched a new home energy efficiency programme.
The initiative will offer residents the chance to borrow free energy monitors, ahead of the government's highly-anticipated smart energy meter rollout.
Householders will be able to track their energy consumption using the gadgets and identify which appliances use the most amount of electricity, enabling them to cut back on unnecessary energy use.
County councillor Tim Ashton, cabinet member for planning and environment, said: "Knowing what is costing you money can help you lower your electricity bill. Just turning a few lights off as you leave the room and reducing the number of appliances you leave on standby can lower your home electricity bills by 5-12 per cent per year."
According to the local authority, the gadgets are easy to install and will not only help householders to reduce their carbon footprint but also their energy bills.
The devices can be collected by residents at the county council's libraries.
