AXA stresses importance of energy efficiency

09 December 2009

Posted by Emily Thomas

Failing to install home energy-efficiency measures could prove to be more costly than burglary, an insurance expert has warned.

According to AXA Home Insurance, more householders claimed for escape of water than both fire and theft during December and January last year.

However, a survey conducted by the company revealed that nearly two-thirds of homeowners worry about burglary but only eight per cent are concerned by the possibility of a pipe breaking.

Last winter, approximately one in every 1,000 householders claimed for water damage, with average costs reaching up to £15,000.

But AXA explained that simple home improvements such as loft and pipe insulation could help protect properties from such disasters.

Nick Kidd, head of home insurance at AXA, said: "Our research shows that people don’t really understand the importance of protecting their water systems from freezing conditions.

"Not only does burst pipe damage have financial implications, especially if insurance is not in place, but it can also cause huge emotional trauma from ruined personal belongings."
