Affordable battery technology for hybrid electric vehicles may soon be made available thanks to the Red-Lion project.
The Energy Saving Trust-backed initiative saw Ricardo and QinetiQ join forces to develop the low-cost lithium-ion battery.
Now, the companies claim to have produced a battery pack that is significantly less in both cost and weight.
Neville Jackson, Ricardo group technology director, said: "By combining a new Li-Ion battery cell chemistry with our innovative battery pack and management system technology, the RED-LION project has demonstrated that an iron sulphide-based cell chemistry is a viable energy storage solution for hybrid vehicle use.
"Ricardo is pleased to have been able to work with QinetiQ, with the support of the Energy Saving Trust, to deliver these very promising results."
Transport currently accounts for nearly a quarter of the UK's entire carbon output.
In a bid to help reduce the nation's carbon footprint, the government declared earlier this year that all cars in Britain would be either 100 per cent electric or hybrid models by 2020.
