Recession 'boosts green IT take-up'

04 July 2009

As the credit crunch continues to claim businesses, there could be an increase in the adoption of green IT initiatives, it has been claimed.

Published by Datamonitor, a report reveals that firms are being forced to look for ways to cut their capital expenditure.

The Can Green IT Bloom in an Economic Downturn? document claims that IT solutions such as virtualisation, efficient datacentre design and asset lifecycle management will prosper as long as the recession continues.

Furthermore, businesses are beginning to realise that being environmentally friendly and cutting costs can go hand-in-hand.

Rhonda Ascierto, senior analyst at Datamonitor and author of the report, said: "The global economic recession has spurred a paradigm shift in the way organisations evaluate, budget for and deploy green IT."

The Society for IT Management, environmental charity Global Action Plan and supplier Logicalis recently called for a stimulus package from the government to boost sustainable IT solutions, ComputerWeekly.com reported.
