Plans for UK's first sustainable suburb proposed

30 January 2010

A multi-million pound regeneration project has been proposed for Felnex Industrial Estate in Hackbridge.

Schroder Property Investment Management has submitted proposals to Sutton Council for a £150 million regeneration of the estate, the Sutton Guardian reported.

If the proposals are accepted the estate will become the first "sustainable suburb" in Britain.

Energy efficient homes are at the top of the agenda and all materials for building will be sourced as locally as possible.

Head of asset management at Schroder Property Investment Management Neil Meredith commented: "Our vision is to create a sustainable, innovative development that will spearhead Hackbridge's regeneration."

He added: "We want Hackbridge to become the UK's most sustainable place to live, work and visit. This means zero carbon homes, an integrated approach to travel and sustainable business and food schemes."

If the outline plans are accepted, a more detailed application will be made in 2011/12.
