The government has announced that four proposed eco-towns will get the go-ahead.
Sustainable developments are to be worked on at Rackheath in Norfolk, Whitehill Bordon in East Hampshire, north-west Bicester in Oxford and St Austell in Cornwall.
Up to 30,000 people will benefit from the sites when they are completed in five years time, the authorities explained.
Developers in the locations will need to bid for a share of £60 million worth of funding which the government is providing to support local infrastructure.
John Healy, housing minister, said: "If Britain is going to be successful and safe from climate change in the future, we have to change the way we live now.
"We are leading the way on the world stage with these developments by radically rethinking how we design, plan and build our homes we can create zero carbon developments, which combine affordable housing with new green infrastructures and a higher quality of life."
The government initially received 57 eco-town expressions of interest.
