Energy saving development earns prize

14 March 2009

A development of new homes that use energy efficiency and renewable energy to lower domestic running costs has earned an award.

The development in Werneth, which replaced unpopular social housing with properties that achieve the EcoHomes rating of Very Good has won the Daily Telegraph Your New Home award in the Best Brownfield Site category.

Devon Street and Norfolk Street residents also benefit from wind turbines which generate renewable electricity.

Ian Finlay of Ian Finlay Architects added: "It was a pleasure working with the residents of Devon and Norfolk Streets to help them achieve their hopes and aspirations, and we are delighted that the Home Zone designs created are having such a beneficial and transformational impact on the neighbourhood."

The Ecohomes standard was replaced as an assessment method for new build houses by the Code for Sustainable Homes in 2007.

From 2016 onwards, all new homes will have to be zero carbon.
